Retarget YouTube Ads

YouTube retargeting is how you turn casual viewers into customers. Instead of showing ads to a cold audience, you target people who have already watched your videos, visited your channel, or even liked your content. These are warm leads. They know who you are. This playbook shows you how to create targeted video ad campaigns that speak directly to this high-intent audience, bringing them back to your site to sign up or buy.

Retargeting follows your audience from viewer to customer.

Why This Works

Repetition builds trust. In marketing, this is called the 'Mere-Exposure Effect'--people develop a preference for things merely because they are familiar with them. When a user sees your helpful tutorial and then later sees a targeted ad from you, it's not an interruption. It's a follow-up from a familiar face. You're no longer a random brand; you're the one who already provided value, making your call to action significantly more effective.

You're targeting based on demonstrated interest, not just demographics. Someone who watched 75% of your 10-minute product demo is infinitely more qualified than someone who just fits an age and location profile. YouTube's retargeting allows you to segment audiences with incredible precision--target viewers of specific videos, channel subscribers, or people who have engaged. This laser-focus means less wasted ad spend and higher conversion rates because your message is only shown to people who are already part-way down the funnel.

Wistia gets hyper-specific with video audiences

Wistia, a video hosting platform for business, uses YouTube retargeting to nurture leads. They create audiences based on which videos people watched on their channel--like a tutorial on video production vs. a webinar on video marketing ROI. They then serve ads that are hyper-relevant to that original topic, guiding viewers to the next logical step. This ensures the ad resonates, leading to more efficient lead generation.

Monday.com uses retargeting to stay top-of-mind

Monday.com invests heavily in YouTube content. A key part of their strategy is retargeting viewers of their channel. If you watch one of their videos on 'agile methodology', you're likely to see a short, direct ad from them later that week showcasing their agile-focused features. This repeated exposure keeps them top-of-mind during the user's consideration phase, turning initial curiosity into a product trial.

HubSpot converts blog readers with video ads

HubSpot's strategy extends beyond just video viewers. They place a Google Ads tag on their blog, which receives millions of visitors. They can then retarget these readers on YouTube. Someone who reads an article about 'how to start an email newsletter' might see a YouTube ad for HubSpot's email marketing tools. This cross-channel retargeting connects valuable content with a relevant product, effectively moving users through their funnel.

Consider creating retargeting audiences of people who have engaged with your YouTube ads but haven't converted. You can serve them a different offer, like a downloadable guide instead of a free trial, to re-engage them.

The step-by-step playbook

  1. 1

Step 1: Link your Google Ads and YouTube accounts

This is the essential first step. In your Google Ads account, go to 'Tools & Settings' -> 'Linked Accounts'. Find YouTube, click 'Details', and add your channel. This allows Google Ads to access your YouTube channel data to build retargeting audiences.

  2. 2

Step 2: Create your initial audience lists

In Google Ads, navigate to 'Audience Manager'. Create new 'YouTube users' audiences. Start with the basics: 'Subscribed to a channel', 'Viewed any video', and 'Visited a channel page'. These are your foundational retargeting pools.

  3. 3

Step 3: Create specific video-watch audiences

This is where the magic happens. Create audiences for viewers of specific, high-intent videos. For example, target people who watched your pricing page explainer, a key product demo, or a customer testimonial. You can even target based on view percentage.

  4. 4

Step 4: Script your retargeting ad

Your retargeting ad should be direct and acknowledge the viewer's prior interaction. It should be short (15-30 seconds is ideal). Use the script template below to craft a message that hooks them, reminds them who you are, and presents a clear call to action.

  5. 5

Step 5: Create your video ad

You don't need a massive production budget. Use a tool like Screen Studio to record a quick screen-share demo. Film yourself talking to the camera with your phone. The key is authenticity and a clear message, not Hollywood-level polish.

  6. 6

Step 6: Set up your campaign in Google Ads

Create a new campaign with the goal 'Sales' or 'Leads'. For the campaign type, select 'Video'. Choose 'Custom video campaign' to have full control. Name it clearly, e.g., 'YT-Retargeting - Demo Viewers'.

  7. 7

Step 7: Configure your targeting, budget, and bidding

In the ad group settings, go to 'Audiences' and select the specific YouTube user list you created in Step 3. Set a daily budget (starting with $20/day is fine) and a bidding strategy--'Maximize conversions' is a good starting point.

  8. 8

Step 8: Launch, monitor, and iterate

After your ad is approved, let it run for at least 3-5 days to gather data. Monitor your View-Through Rate (VTR) and Click-Through Rate (CTR). Most importantly, track conversions. If an ad isn't working, test a new hook or a different call to action.

Template: The 20-Second Retargeting Video Script

Use this simple script for a short, direct-to-camera or screen-recording video ad. It's designed for skippable in-stream ads.

**(First 5 seconds - The Hook)**
Hey! You just watched my video on {Topic of original video}.

**(Next 10 seconds - The Value Prop)**
I'm guessing you're looking to {Achieve specific goal}. My product, {Your Product Name}, is designed to do exactly that by {Key benefit 1} and {Key benefit 2}.

Key Questions to Ask

  • Which of my existing videos indicates the highest purchase intent?
  • What is the single most compelling outcome a user gets from my product?
  • Does my ad's call to action perfectly match my landing page's promise?
  • Is my conversion tracking set up correctly to measure signups or sales from this campaign?
  • What's a logical 'next step' to offer someone who just watched a specific video?

The first question is the most critical. Focusing your budget on viewers of your most purchase-intent videos (like pricing explainers or deep demos) will yield the best results.

Brainstorm ad hooks

I'm creating a 15-second YouTube retargeting ad. The target user just watched my video titled 'How to do X with Python'. My product is a SaaS tool that automates X. Generate 5 short, attention-grabbing hooks for the video ad script that reference their previous viewing activity.

Write a video script

Write a 25-second video ad script using the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) framework. The ad is for my app, '{AppName}', which helps users {Solve a problem}. This ad will retarget people who have already subscribed to our YouTube channel. The call to action is to 'Start a 7-day free trial'.

Segment retargeting audiences

I have a YouTube channel for my SaaS product, {ProductName}. Here are my top 5 videos: 1. '{Video 1 Title}' (a product demo) 2. '{Video 2 Title}' (a customer interview) 3. '{Video 3 Title}' (an industry trend analysis) 4. '{Video 4 Title}' (a 'how-to' tutorial) 5. '{Video 5 Title}' (our pricing explained) For each video, define a retargeting audience segment and suggest a specific call to action for an ad targeting that segment.

Mistakes that kill this play

  • Using the same generic ad for all audiences. An ad for a subscriber should be different from an ad for someone who watched your pricing video.
  • Making the ad too long. Retargeting ads work best when they are short, direct, and have a single call to action. Aim for under 30 seconds.
  • Not having a clear Call to Action. Don't just show your product; tell the viewer exactly what you want them to do next ('Click here to start a trial', 'Download the guide').
  • Sending traffic to your homepage. Create a dedicated landing page that matches the ad's message and is optimized for conversion. Don't make them hunt for the offer.
  • Giving up too early. It takes time for Google's algorithm to optimize and for you to gather meaningful data. Don't kill a campaign after 24 hours.
  • Forgetting to set frequency caps. Showing the same person your ad 20 times a day is annoying. Set a frequency cap to limit impressions per user per day or week.
  • Ignoring your view-through conversions. Many people will watch your ad, not click, but convert later. Make sure you're tracking these 'View-Through Conversions' in Google Ads to see the full impact.

Your First 7 Days

  • Day 1: Link your Google Ads and YouTube accounts. Create your three basic audience lists: all viewers, all subscribers, and all channel page visitors.
  • Day 2: Identify your top 1-2 highest-intent videos (e.g., demos, pricing). Create specific retargeting audiences in Google Ads for people who have viewed these videos.
  • Day 3: Write the script for your first retargeting ad using the template provided. Keep it under 30 seconds.
  • Day 4: Record and create your video ad. Use your phone or Screen Studio. Don't overthink it--done is better than perfect.
  • Day 5: Set up your campaign in Google Ads. Target the high-intent audience from Day 2. Set your budget and a 'Maximize Conversions' bid strategy.
  • Day 6: Launch the campaign. Double-check that the ad is approved and running. Install the Google Ads tag on your website to track conversions.
  • Day 7: Review the very first metrics. Don't make any drastic changes yet. Just check impressions, view rate, and clicks to ensure everything is working technically.
