Run ‘Comparison’ Ads
The warmest audience in your market is people already paying a competitor and quietly unhappy about it. Comparison ads put your product in front of them at the exact moment they type '{competitor} alternative'. This playbook covers targeting, compliant ad copy, the landing page that converts, and how not to burn budget.

Why comparison ads are the highest-intent paid channel
Someone searching '{competitor} alternative' or '{competitor} vs' has already accepted that they need this category of product, already has a budget line for it, and is actively dissatisfied. You skip the entire education phase. That's why comparison keywords typically convert several times better than generic category terms, even at a higher cost per click.
The catch is that comparison advertising is a discipline, not a stunt. Bidding on a brand term with sloppy copy gets your ads disapproved or your company a legal letter. Done properly - factual claims, a fair comparison page, a real migration path - it becomes a reliable, defensible acquisition channel.
Three real examples
ClickUp built growth on 'alternative to' positioning
ClickUp ran an aggressive comparison strategy: paid search on competitor terms paired with a dedicated landing page for each rival, listing feature-by-feature differences and an import tool. The ad and the page always matched the exact competitor searched.

Rather than only arguing on features, ConvertKit removed the switching cost entirely with free concierge migration. The ad promises a better fit for creators, and the page removes the biggest objection - the pain of moving your list.

Figma's comparison messaging focused on one specific pain of the incumbent - files, versions and collaboration - rather than a long feature table. A single sharp difference beats twenty small ones in an ad you have three seconds to read.

The step-by-step playbook
- 1
Step 1: Find where the frustration actually is
Read competitor reviews on G2, Capterra, Reddit and the app stores, sorted by 1-3 stars. Tag every complaint. Three or four themes will dominate - pricing, support, a missing feature, complexity. Those themes become your ad angles, in the customers' own words.
- 2
Step 2: Build the keyword list
Three groups: '{competitor} alternative', '{competitor} vs {other}', and '{competitor} pricing / review / cancel'. The last group is people looking for the exit. Keep competitor campaigns in a separate campaign with its own budget so you can judge them independently.
- 3
Step 3: Write compliant, factual ad copy
Do not put the competitor's trademark in the headline on Google - it usually gets disapproved. Use 'A simpler alternative to legacy tools' or the pain theme instead. Every claim must be verifiable and dated: 'Half the price of most alternatives - see the comparison' beats 'the best tool ever'.
- 4
Step 4: Build one landing page per competitor
Never send comparison traffic to your homepage. Each page needs: a headline naming the switcher's pain, an honest feature and price table, three testimonials from people who switched, a migration path, and one CTA. Include where the competitor is genuinely better - it dramatically raises trust.
- 5
Step 5: Remove the switching cost
The main reason people stay is the pain of moving. Offer an importer, free concierge migration, or credit covering their remaining contract. State it clearly in the ad and above the fold on the page.
- 6
Step 6: Add paid social retargeting
Search catches active shoppers; social creates them. Run comparison creative on LinkedIn or Meta to people in the competitor's job titles or interest audiences, and retarget everyone who visited a comparison page but didn't sign up.
- 7
Step 7: Measure to revenue, not clicks
Comparison clicks are expensive, so judge them on cost per paying customer and retention after 90 days. Track each competitor campaign separately - one rival's users will convert and stick far better than another's, and that's where the budget should go.
The switcher ad and page framework (steal this)
Fill this in per competitor. Keeping ad, page and offer aligned to a single pain is what makes the campaign profitable.
COMPARISON CAMPAIGN: vs {competitor}

- H1: Looking for a {category} tool that {solves_complaint_1}?
- Comparison table: price, {feature_1}, {feature_2}, support, migration
- Where they're better: {honest_admission}
- 3 switcher testimonials with names and companies
- Offer: {migration_offer}

- What exactly do this competitor's unhappy users complain about most?
- Can we prove every claim we make, with a dated source?
- What's the real cost for someone to switch to us - and how do we remove it?
- Which competitor's users retain best once they move to us?
- What's our maximum acceptable cost per paying customer on this channel?
If you can't name the specific frustration you're targeting, you're not running a comparison campaign - you're just paying more for generic traffic.

Include: H1 naming the switcher's pain, intro paragraph, an honest feature/price table, a section on where {competitor} is genuinely better, a migration section, 3 testimonial placeholders, and one CTA. Tone: confident, factual, never smug.
Design the switcher offer
Our product is {product}, priced at {price}. Users switching from {competitor} face these switching costs: {costs}. Propose 5 switcher offers (migration help, credits, contract buyout, extended trial) with the likely impact on conversion and on our margin.
Mistakes that kill this play
- Putting a competitor's trademark in Google headlines and getting the whole account flagged.
- Making claims you can't prove with a dated source.
- Sending comparison traffic to the homepage instead of a per-competitor page.
- Attacking the competitor's character instead of naming a specific, factual difference.
- Ignoring switching costs - people agree you're better and stay anyway.
- Judging the campaign on clicks or CTR instead of cost per retained customer.
