A blog is a marketing asset you own completely.

Why a blog is a cornerstone asset

A blog is a powerful SEO engine. Every article you publish is a new page for Google to index and a new opportunity for customers to find you when they search for solutions. Unlike paid ads, which stop when you stop paying, a high-ranking blog post can bring in qualified traffic for years. It's a compounding investment in growth.

Content builds trust and authority. By consistently publishing high-quality content that solves your audience's problems, you establish your brand as an expert in your field. This makes the sales process easier. When customers trust you, they are more likely to choose your product over a competitor's.

The step-by-step playbook

  1. 1

    Step 1: Define your niche

Don't write for everyone. Get hyper-specific. Who is your ideal customer? What are their top 3-5 pain points? Your blog's mission is to solve these pains. Write down a one-sentence mission statement for your blog.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Do keyword research

Identify the search terms your target audience uses when looking for solutions. Use a tool like Ahrefs or Google Keyword Planner. Focus on long-tail keywords (3+ words) with clear user intent - these are easier to rank for and convert better.

  3. 3

Step 3: Create a content calendar

Plan your first 8-10 posts. Create a simple spreadsheet with columns for 'Topic', 'Target Keyword', 'Status', and 'Publish Date'. This ensures consistency, which is critical for building an audience.

  4. 4

    Step 4: Choose your platform

Use a simple, scalable platform. WordPress with a good theme (like Elementor) is a reliable choice. Or, use a simple site builder like Super.so with Notion. Don't overcomplicate it. The focus is on content, not a fancy design.

  5. 5

Step 5: Write your first 'pillar' post

Your first post should be a 'pillar' piece of content -- a long-form, comprehensive guide to a major pain point. Aim for 2,000+ words. This will be your cornerstone asset for SEO and promotion.

  6. 6

    Step 6: Add a clear call-to-action (CTA)

Every blog post needs a purpose. What do you want the reader to do next? Sign up for your newsletter? Try your app? Add a clear, compelling CTA at the end of each post and sometimes within the post itself.

  7. 7

    Step 7: Promote your content

Writing is only half the battle. Share your post on your social channels, in relevant online communities (like Reddit or Indie Hackers), and reach out to anyone you mentioned in the article. Spend as much time promoting as you did writing.

The 'Helpful Resource' Outreach Template

Use this email template to share your new article with people or companies you mentioned, or influencers who have shared similar content.

Subject: A resource for your audience, {FirstName}?

Hi {FirstName},

I saw you shared an article about {SimilarTopic} and thought you might find this interesting.

I just published a deep-dive on {YourTopic}, including {SpecificDetail or Finding}.

Here it is: {YourURL}

I thought it might be a useful resource for your audience. Either way, keep up the great work!

Best,

{YourName}

Questions to ask yourself

  • What is the single biggest problem my target customer has that I can solve with content?
  • Where does my target customer hang out online? (e.g., specific subreddits, forums, newsletters)
  • What unique perspective or data can I bring to my content that no one else can?
  • How will my blog convert readers into customers? (e.g., newsletter, free tool, trial signup)
  • Can I commit to publishing one high-quality post consistently (e.g., weekly, bi-weekly) for at least 6 months?

The first two questions are the most important. If you can't answer them clearly, your blog will struggle to find an audience.

Do it faster with AI Prompts

Generate blog post ideas

Act as a content marketing expert for a SaaS company that sells {YourProductDescription}. My target audience is {YourAudienceDescription}. Their biggest pain points are {PainPoint1}, {PainPoint2}, and {PainPoint3}. Generate 10 blog post titles that address these pain points and are likely to rank on Google.

Create a blog post outline

Create a detailed, SEO-friendly outline for a blog post titled '{YourPostTitle}'. The target keyword is '{YourKeyword}'. The outline should include an H1, multiple H2s and H3s, and bullet points for key topics to cover under each heading. The goal is to create the most comprehensive resource on this topic.

Write a blog post introduction

Write a compelling 2-3 sentence introduction for a blog post titled '{YourPostTitle}'. The introduction should hook the reader by acknowledging their pain point and promising a clear, effective solution within the article.

Write a call-to-action

My product is a {YourProductDescription}. Write three different versions of a compelling call-to-action (CTA) to place at the end of a blog post about {BlogPostTopic}. The CTA should encourage readers to sign up for a free trial.

Mistakes that kill this play

  • Writing about your product instead of your customer's problems. No one cares about your features. They care about what your product can do for them. Frame everything around the user's needs.
  • Inconsistency. Publishing five articles in one week and then nothing for two months is a recipe for failure. Set a realistic publishing schedule and stick to it. Consistency builds momentum and audience trust.
  • Ignoring SEO. Writing great content isn't enough. You need to optimize it for search engines so people can find it. This means doing keyword research and using on-page SEO best practices.
  • Not promoting your content. Hitting 'publish' is the starting line, not the finish line. You need to actively promote every article you write. Expect to spend at least 50% of your time on promotion.
  • Giving up too early. A blog is a long-term game. You won't see significant traffic overnight. It takes months of consistent effort to build an audience and see results. Don't quit after 30 days.
  • Having a boring, generic title. Your headline is the most important part of your article. Spend time writing multiple options and choose one that is specific, intriguing, and promises a clear benefit.
  • Not having a clear Call-To-Action (CTA). If you don't ask your readers to do something, they won't. Every post should guide the reader toward the next step, whether it's joining your newsletter or starting a trial.

Your first 7 days

  • Day 1: Define your niche and content mission. Interview one ideal customer about their pain points.
  • Day 2: Perform initial keyword research. Identify 10-15 potential long-tail keywords to target.
  • Day 3: Choose and set up your blogging platform (e.g., WordPress + Elementor). Create your content calendar and schedule your first 4 posts.
  • Day 4: Outline your first 'pillar' blog post. Use an AI prompt to help structure it.
  • Day 5-6: Write, edit, and format the pillar post. Create any necessary images or graphics. Add a clear CTA.
  • Day 7: Publish and promote! Share it on all your channels and send at least 5 outreach emails using the template.
