Why This Works
Requiring a credit card is a huge psychological barrier. Users immediately worry about forgetting to cancel, being charged unexpectedly, or the hassle of managing another subscription. It introduces high friction right at the moment you want the user journey to be smoothest. Stating 'no credit card required' directly addresses this fear, calming their anxiety and making the decision to sign up feel safe and low-stakes. It also removes a practical barrier--no need to get up and find their wallet.
Offering a truly free trial without asking for payment details shows immense confidence in your product's value. You're telling the user, 'I believe that once you try this, you'll see its worth and will want to pay for it'. This builds trust and goodwill from the very first interaction. Users who can explore your product without pressure are more likely to integrate it into their workflow, discover its core value, and convert to paying customers because they've already experienced the benefits firsthand.
Three real examples
HubSpot boosts leads by removing credit card form
HubSpot, a leader in marketing automation, famously tested the impact of requiring a credit card for their free trial. They found that the version of the form *without* the credit card requirement consistently generated more leads and trials. This classic A/B test proved that reducing upfront friction leads to a wider top of funnel, giving them more users to nurture into customers.

Close, a sales CRM for startups and SMBs, has built its growth strategy around a frictionless 14-day free trial. Their signup page prominently features the phrase 'No credit card required'. CEO Steli Efti advocates that the goal of a trial is to get users to experience the product's value, and asking for a credit card is a major obstacle to that goal. Their success demonstrates that a high-quality product can convert users effectively after they've been given a no-strings-attached trial.

Ahrefs, a top-tier SEO platform, uses a 'no credit card required' strategy to introduce users to their ecosystem via Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. By offering a valuable, free product without asking for payment info, they onboard a huge number of site owners and marketers. These users then get to see the power of Ahrefs' data, making the upgrade to a full, paid plan a much easier decision down the line.

The step-by-step playbook
- 1
1. Audit Your Current Signup Flow
Go through your own signup process as if you were a new user. Document every step, every field you have to fill out, and every click. Pay special attention to the moment you ask for payment details.
- 2
2. Identify the Friction Point
Locate the credit card form. This is your primary point of friction. Take a baseline measurement of your current conversion rate from the landing page to a successful trial start.
- 3
3. Remove the Credit Card Fields
In your code or website builder, remove the credit card number, expiry date, and CVC fields from the signup form. Make sure to also remove any associated validation logic that would prevent the form from submitting.
- 4
4. Add the 'No Credit Card Required' Copy
Add clear, explicit text right next to the CTA button or email input field. Use phrases like 'No credit card required', 'Free 14-day trial - no card needed', or 'Get started for free. No credit card required.'
- 5
5. Check Associated Copy
Ensure your button copy is consistent. Instead of 'Start my free trial', which can be ambiguous, use 'Create my free account' or 'Sign up free'. This reinforces the no-commitment message.
- 6
6. Deploy and Measure
Push the change live. Use analytics tools like June.so, Mixpanel, or Google Analytics to monitor your signup conversion rate. Compare the new rate against the baseline you established in step 2.
- 7
7. Plan Your Upgrade Nudges
With more free users coming in, you need a clear strategy to convert them. Plan in-app prompts, email sequences, and feature gates that will encourage users to upgrade to a paid plan once they've seen the value.
Template: The 'Trial Ending' Upgrade Email
Now that users have experienced your product, you need a simple, direct way to ask them to upgrade. Send this email 2-3 days before their trial expires.
Subject: Your {ProductName} trial is ending soon
Hi {FirstName},
Just a quick heads-up that your free trial of {ProductName} will end in 3 days.
Over the past week, you've used {FeatureName} to achieve {UserAction}. To keep your access and unlock even more features, you can upgrade your account now.
It only takes a minute:
{UpgradeURL}
If you have any questions, just reply to this email.
Thanks,
The {ProductName} TeamKey Questions To Ask Yourself
- Am I creating a psychological barrier by asking for a credit card too early?
- Is my 'free' trial truly free, or does it come with hidden strings?
- What is the single biggest point of doubt for a new user on my pricing or signup page?
- How can I show confidence in my product's value right from the start?
- Does my user get to an 'aha!' moment before the trial ends?
Focus on the first question. If your signup form causes even a moment of hesitation or anxiety, you're losing potential champions of your product.

Generate copy variations
Act as a conversion copywriter. I am removing the credit card requirement from my SaaS free trial signup form. Generate 10 short, high-impact phrases (under 7 words) to communicate this benefit to potential users. Place the phrases near the call-to-action button.
Brainstorm 'aha' moments
My product is a {description of your product}. A user has just signed up for a free trial. What are the top 3 'aha!' moments they should experience within the first 7 days to be convinced to upgrade? For each moment, describe the user action and the value they receive.
Draft an upgrade email sequence
Write a 3-part email sequence for a user on a 14-day free trial of a SaaS product called {ProductName}. The goal is to convert them to a paid plan. - Email 1 (Day 5): Offer help and highlight a key feature. - Email 2 (Day 11): Announce the trial is ending soon and remind them of the value they've received. - Email 3 (Day 14): Final reminder on the last day of the trial, creating urgency to upgrade.
Mistakes that kill this play
- Not being explicit enough. Don't just remove the fields; add the copy 'No credit card required' so users feel safe.
- Forgetting to measure the 'before' state. You can't know if the change worked if you don't have a baseline conversion rate to compare it against.
- Having no plan to convert. Getting more free users is a vanity metric if you have no strategy (email sequences, in-app prompts) to turn them into paying customers.
- Creating a poor user experience. If the trial is too short or too limited for users to experience the 'aha!' moment, they will never convert, card or no card.
- Making the upgrade process difficult. Once a user decides to pay, the process should be seamless. Don't make them jump through hoops to give you money.
- Not communicating the trial end date. Users should know exactly how long their trial lasts. Unexpectedly losing access creates a negative experience.
Your First 5 Days
- Day 1: Take a screenshot of your current signup form and record your current signup-to-trial conversion rate. This is your baseline.
- Day 2: In a staging environment or a copy of your site, remove the credit card fields and any backend validation. Add the text 'No credit card required' prominently on the form.
- Day 3: Deploy the new signup form. Announce it to your team. Set up an analytics dashboard (e.g., in June.so) to monitor signups in real-time.
- Day 4: Analyze the first 24-48 hours of data. Has the number of daily signups increased? What is the new conversion rate from page view to trial start?
- Day 5: Begin mapping out your trial-to-paid conversion strategy. Start drafting the 'trial ending soon' email and identify the key 'aha' moments to highlight.
