Templates
The blank canvas is where new users quit. Templates hand people a finished starting point, so their first session ends in a result instead of a shrug. Done well, a template library is also one of the best long-tail SEO assets a product can own.

Why templates move both activation and traffic
Most churn happens in the first ten minutes, and the cause is almost always the empty state. A new user knows the outcome they want but not the steps to build it. A template collapses that gap: pick, open, edit, done - and the aha moment arrives inside one session instead of three.
Templates also create hundreds of specific landing pages that match real searches like '{job} template' or '{use case} template'. Each one is a page with a clear intent, a preview, and a single call to action that requires an account to use. That combination - search intent plus instant value - converts far better than a generic homepage.
Three real examples
Notion's template gallery became a growth channel
Notion's biggest early problem was the blank page. The template gallery solved it and simultaneously became an enormous SEO surface: every template is a page targeting a specific job to be done, and using one requires an account.

Canva never shows a blank canvas first - it shows templates for the exact thing you came to make. Design skill stops being a barrier, and the search terms 'instagram post template', 'poster template' and thousands more all lead into the product.

Webflow lets the community publish cloneable projects. New users get a professional starting point, creators get exposure, and Webflow gets an ever-growing library it didn't have to build - a template flywheel powered by users.

The step-by-step playbook
- 1
Step 1: Mine your data for the top 10 jobs
Look at what your most successful accounts actually built, plus your top support questions and search terms. The first ten templates should mirror the ten things people already try to do - not what you find interesting to build.
- 2
Step 2: Build each template to a finished standard
Fill it with realistic sample content, not lorem ipsum. A template with placeholder junk feels like homework; one with a believable example feels like a shortcut. Include short inline notes explaining what to change.
- 3
Step 3: Give every template its own page
One URL per template with a descriptive title ('{Job} template for {audience}'), a preview image, what's included, who it's for, and a single 'Use this template' button. This is what makes the library rank.
- 4
Step 4: Wire the one-click 'use this template' flow
Clicking should create a working copy in the user's account in one step. If they're logged out, sign up first and land them straight inside the copied template - never dump them on a dashboard where they have to find it again.
- 5
Step 5: Surface templates in onboarding and empty states
Replace every blank screen with a template picker. Ask one question during signup ('what are you here to build?') and show the three matching templates immediately.
- 6
Step 6: Let users and partners contribute
Add a submission form so power users can publish their own templates with credit and a link back. This scales the library without your team building every one, and gives creators a reason to promote it.
- 7
Step 7: Measure and prune
Track uses per template, activation rate of users who start from a template versus blank, and organic traffic per page. Double down on the top five, rewrite the weak ones, delete anything nobody touches.
The template submission brief (steal this)
Send this to power users or partners you want to contribute templates. Clear requirements mean you get usable submissions instead of half-finished projects.
Hi {first_name},
We're opening up our template gallery to the community and I'd love to feature yours - your {thing_they_built} is exactly the kind of setup other {audience} are looking for.
What we need:
1. The template with realistic sample content (no placeholders)
2. A one-line description of who it's for and what it does
3. 3-5 bullet points on what's included
4. A short note on how to customise it
What you get: your name, photo and link on the template page, plus a shout-out to our list of {list_size} users.

{your_name}Questions to choose your first 10 templates
- What do our most successful accounts have in common in their setup?
- Which use case do people ask us to 'just set up for them'?
- What '{job} template' searches already have volume in our niche?
- Where in the product do new users stall or go quiet?
- Which competitor templates are popular but poorly executed?
Ship ten excellent templates rather than fifty mediocre ones. A weak template damages trust more than a missing one.

Generate your template roadmap
My product is {product_description} for {ICP}. List the 20 most common jobs these users try to accomplish, ranked by how often they'd occur, and turn each into a template name and a one-line description of what's inside.
Write the template page copy
Write the landing page copy for a template called "{template_name}" for {audience} using {product_name}. Include: SEO title under 60 chars, meta description under 160 chars, a 2-sentence intro, 'what's included' bullets, 'who it's for', and a 3-step 'how to customise it'.
Fill it with realistic sample data
Create realistic sample content for a {template_type} template used by {audience}. Give me {n} example rows/items with plausible names, numbers and dates that make the template feel like a real working example, not a placeholder.
Find template keywords
For a product in the {category} space, list 30 long-tail search phrases containing the word 'template' that our ideal customers would search. Group them by intent and mark which ones a new site could realistically rank for.
Mistakes that kill this play
- Templates full of lorem ipsum that feel like more work than starting fresh.
- Burying the gallery in the docs instead of putting it in onboarding and empty states.
- One giant gallery page instead of an indexable page per template.
- A 'use this template' flow that takes five clicks or loses the user after signup.
- Publishing 60 templates nobody needs instead of 10 that match real jobs.
- Never measuring activation from templates versus blank starts.
Your first 5 days
- Day 1: Pull your data: top use cases from successful accounts, support questions and search terms. Pick 10 templates.
- Day 2: Build the first three templates properly, with realistic sample content and inline notes.
- Day 3: Design the template page layout: preview, what's included, who it's for, one CTA.
- Day 4: Ship the one-click 'use this template' flow, including the signed-out signup path.
- Day 5: Replace your main empty state with the template picker and set up tracking per template.
