Template Library
A Template Library is a search-powered engine for growth. It turns user intent--'how do I create a project plan?'--into high-value traffic and signups. Instead of a blank canvas, you give users a powerful starting point inside your product, demonstrating value in seconds and creating a natural path to activation.

Why Template Libraries Work
This is a search-first strategy. Your future users aren't searching for your product-they're searching for a solution to their problem. This often takes the form of 'X template' or 'how to do Y'. By creating a comprehensive library of templates that match these search terms, you attract high-intent users actively looking for a solution. Every template page becomes a new, SEO-optimized landing page that works for you 24/7, pulling in organic traffic that would never have found your homepage.
Template libraries are a perfect product-led growth (PLG) mechanic. They solve the 'blank canvas' problem that plagues many apps, where a user signs up and doesn't know what to do next. A template provides immediate value and a clear path to action. It's a 'show, don't tell' approach to onboarding, guiding users to their 'aha!' moment faster. This dramatically increases the odds they will activate, adopt your product, and eventually convert to paying customers.
Three real examples
Notion's Template Gallery
Notion's growth is inseparable from its template gallery. It's a massive, user-filterable collection covering everything from student dashboards to startup fundraising. This strategy established Notion as a flexible tool for any use case a user could imagine, creating a powerful acquisition loop where users find a template on Google, sign up to use it, and then share their own creations back with the community.

Miro, a visual workspace, built Miroverse-a library for users to share their board setups. This was a genius move. It not only provides a massive, ever-growing source of SEO content for niche use cases but also builds a deep, defensible moat. Users and experts build their own brands within the Miro ecosystem, making the platform stickier and more valuable with every new submission.

Airtable Universe is a public library of Airtable 'bases' (their name for a database). It showcases the incredible variety of problems Airtable can solve, from managing cattle herds to planning a wedding. By allowing users to explore and copy these bases, Airtable makes its powerful but potentially intimidating product instantly accessible and useful, turning 'what can I do with this?' into 'I can do anything with this.'

The step-by-step playbook
- 1
Step 1: Identify Core Use Cases
What are the top 5-10 jobs your customers 'hire' your product to do? Don't guess. Talk to users, check support tickets, and analyze product data. These are the foundational themes for your template categories.
- 2
Step 2: Research High-Intent Keywords
For each use case, find the keywords people are searching for. Use a simple keyword tool to look for phrases like '[use case] template', '[goal] checklist', or '[job title] dashboard'. Prioritize terms with good volume and low competition.
- 3
Step 3: Create the First 5 Templates
Don't boil the ocean. Start with a small batch of high-quality templates that address your core use cases and keywords. Make them genuinely useful, well-designed, and pre-filled with helpful examples.
- 4
Step 4: Design the Library Hub Page
This is your main gallery page. It needs a clear headline, a brief explanation, and a filterable/searchable grid of all your templates. Make it easy for users to browse and find what they need in seconds.
- 5
Step 5: Build Individual Template Pages
Each template gets its own SEO-optimized landing page. Include a clear title (matching the keyword), a preview image or video, a description of what it is and who it's for, and a very prominent call-to-action to 'Use this template'.
- 6
Step 6: Decide on Your 'Gate'
How will users access the template? For maximum SEO and discovery, let them view the page. To use the template, the best practice is to require a free signup. This is the 'PLG' exchange: 'Here's a valuable asset, just create a free account to use it in our product'.
- 7
Step 7: Promote Every Template
Don't just launch and pray. Every time you release a new template, treat it like a mini-product launch. Share it on social media, email your list, and submit it to relevant communities or directories.
- 8
Step 8: Encourage Community Submissions
Once you have traction, build a simple submission flow for your users to share their own templates. This creates a flywheel effect, scaling your library and building a community around your product, just like Notion and Miro.
Ask for Community Submissions
To scale your library, tap into your community's creativity. Use this simple email to invite your best users to contribute.

Brainstorm template ideas
I am building a template library for my product, {YourProduct}, which is a {ProductDescription}. My target audience is {AudienceDescription}. Based on common use cases like {UseCase1}, {UseCase2}, and {UseCase3}, generate a list of 20 specific template ideas that this audience would search for on Google. For each idea, provide a likely search keyword.
Write an SEO-optimized template description
Write a 150-word description for a landing page. The page is for a template titled '{TemplateTitle}'. The target keyword is '{Keyword}'. The product is {YourProduct}. The description should be engaging, clearly explain the benefit of the template, who it's for, and include a call to action to 'get the template'.
Write a promotional social media post
Write a short, punchy promotional post for Twitter and LinkedIn to announce a new template. The template is '{TemplateTitle}' and it helps {Audience} to {AchieveGoal}. Include the key benefits, a question to drive engagement, and a link: {URL}. Add relevant hashtags.
Mistakes that kill this play
- Making templates too complex. Good templates are simple, focused, and easy to understand in 5 seconds.
- Hiding the library. It should be in your main navigation and easy to find from your homepage.
- No clear Call-to-Action (CTA). Every template page needs a huge, obvious button like 'Use This Template'.
- Building for niche cases first. Start with the most popular, high-volume use cases before going long-tail.
- Forgetting SEO basics. Your page titles, URLs, and descriptions must match what people are searching for.
- Never adding new templates. A library that never grows looks abandoned. Add new content regularly.
Your First 5 Days
- Day 1: Hold a 1-hour workshop with your team to define your top 5 use cases. Then, do 2 hours of keyword research to find the top search term for each.
- Day 2: Outline the content for your first 3 templates. What information do they need? What example data will you include to make them useful instantly?
- Day 3: Create a simple wireframe or sketch for your main library page and your individual template pages. Focus on the CTA placement.
- Day 4: Start building your first template inside your product. Write the copy for its landing page using the AI prompt from this playbook.
- Day 5: Set up a simple submission form using a free tool like Tally.so. This gets you ready for community contributions from day one.
